Whirlwind D

Page history last edited by rhyme traveller 10 years, 2 months ago Saved with comment

Whirlwind D (Dudley Jaynes) grew up in Raynes Park, South London. Having been into hip hop since the early 80s and part of the Radioactive Posse alongside MSD amongst others, he got his first break working with Pinky and Lap One Productions around 1988. Some very rough demos from this time exist! From here, D spent some time working with Angelo Starr and a fledgling Kold Sweat Productions, but it wasn't until a chance meeting with Johnny F in 1989 that he would begin to make a lasting impression.

Johnny F and Whirlwind D spent a year or so perfecting their craft before Liberty Grooves was born and the first Solid n Mind twelve inch single ('An Original Break' Cat: LIB001) came out in 1990. The duo would release three twelves on the label, recorded between 1990 and 1992. Their most recent, 'Battle Tipped Rhyme' was finally unearthed in 2010 and was reconstructed by The Assembly Worker.

Whirlwind D moved to the South Coast in 1991 and although he still spent much of his time at Liberty Grooves - The Hip Hop Shop in Tooting, his work with Johnny F as a recording artist would end here. Quickly, D became involved with the Southampton scene and spent a couple of years MCing with the Firin' Squad as well as a few other groups of DJs including Funk Fuzz. At the same time he met Sweetman and Mark H with whom he would run various nights in the cities at locations such as The Rhino Club, The Maple Leaf and The Pier. Around 1995, Whirlwind D forged a partnership with DJ Panik (Sweetman) and as well as recording a couple of tracks (unreleased), including 'Sun's Rise', they put on a number of nights on the South Coast at venues like The Brook and in London.

In the late nineties, although D was still rhyming, things slowed down until the turn of the millennium when he would begin his work as a writer for various magazines including Undercover Magazine, Ethics and Record Collector Magazine. In 2011, after 'Battle Tipped Rhyme' received the remix treatment and appeared on 'Underground United Volume 2' (Naked Ape Recordings), D decided to step back into the music game, joining forces with Waxer for the 'WD40 EP' (Tru-Tone Records). This was then followed up with the 'Bristol Built' 12" single, where D teamed up with Mr Fantastic, Sir Beanz OBE, Truck and Rola. Both the 'WD40 EP' and 'Bristol Built' featured pictures covers designed by Mr Krum. At the same time, Whirlwind teamed up with the B Line Records crew, releasing 'Broadway' alongside Agent Finch & Specifik and Mr Thing.

Since re-entering the game, Whirlwind D has starting performing again, hosts the 'Pioneers Hip Hop Show' on Kane FM and continues to record, with an LP in the pipeline...
